RMIT alumni shine in MIFF program

RMIT University is proud to again partner with Melbourne International Film Festival in 2025, with works by RMIT alumni starring in this year’s program.

A feature film titled Careless, directed by RMIT alum Sue Thomson will debut at the festival, while an immersive installation and creative virtual reality documentary titled The World Came Flooding In, created by RMIT alumni Isobel Knowles and Van Sowerwine, will also feature.  

“RMIT media arts was incredibly formative for our collaboration and for the nature of the work we make,” said Van and Isobel. 

The duo met while studying a Bachelor of Media Arts at RMIT and have worked together on creative projects for the 24 years since. 

“It was at RMIT that we learnt about using interactivity to create thoroughly engaging art experiences,” the pair continued.  

“Over our entire collaboration we’ve also really valued working with other people we met at RMIT for set building, sound design, music, and coding.

“Now, being able to have the world premiere of our work, which we have been making for the past two years, in our hometown is the best launch we can imagine.”

Award-winning film maker Sue Thomson’s portfolio of work includes The Coming Back Out Ball and Undercover, and her new film Careless is making its international premiere at this year’s festival. 

An RMIT alum with a Master of Creative Media, Sue says that her study at RMIT is part of her lifelong enthusiasm for learning.   

“Attending RMIT in 2006 to do a masters was a passion,” says Sue. 

“I wanted to learn more about film making. I still have much to learn and love nothing more than understanding new trends, new innovations, new ideas, and creative practices.”

MIFF is playing at cinemas across Melbourne, regional Victoria, and streaming online from 7 – 24 August, including at RMIT’s very own The Capitol. 

One of the longest-running film festivals in the world, MIFF has a proud history of screening impactful films from across the globe while profiling Australia’s best homegrown cinema.
